What is Massage Therapy?
Massage therapy involves using different techniques to manipulate the soft tissues of the body, like muscles, tendons, and ligaments. It’s usually done by trained professionals known as massage therapists, but people can also do it themselves or with less formal training.
There are lots of different ways to do massage, each with its own benefits and goals. Some focus on relaxation and reducing stress, while others target specific areas of tension or pain. Whether it’s with long, gentle strokes or deeper pressure, the aim is to promote healing, relieve discomfort, and improve overall well-being.
People use massage therapy for all sorts of reasons, from soothing sore muscles to managing chronic conditions. It’s often part of a holistic approach to health, alongside things like exercise, nutrition, and other therapies. So, whether you’re looking to unwind after a long day or address a specific issue, massage therapy offers a versatile and effective way to support your body and mind.
Meet Our Massage Therapist
Massage Therapist Michael Alilovich
Massage Therapy Specialist
My foray into massage therapy started around seven years prior to me actually taking classes to become certified. I played hockey most of my life and would always be a little sore after taking some hits or blocking shots. I researched ways to manage my injuries and discovered some self-massage techniques. Eventually, other players on my teams wanted me to work on them. It seemed like I had a natural knack for it as everybody was noticing improvements in their range of motion and recovery. You can image my surprise when I later learned in school what I did was not just placebo. The body responds great when we show it some appreciation.

Our Massage Therapy Methods
We use several techniques at Cross-up Chiro, depending on our patient’s needs. One or more techniques may be used to provide the best results for you.
Therapeutic Massage
Therapeutic massage is a broad term that refers to any massage technique or modality aimed at promoting healing, relieving pain, and improving overall well-being. Therapeutic massage is more targeted and often addresses specific health concerns or conditions. At Cross-Up, this type of massage is often utilized when the therapist coordinates with one of our physicians.
Relaxation Massage
Relaxation massage is a gentle and soothing form of massage therapy primarily aimed at inducing relaxation and reducing stress. During a relaxation massage session, the massage therapist typically uses long, smooth strokes and gentle, circular movements to manipulate the muscles and tissues of the body. The pressure applied is usually light to moderate, and the pace is slow and rhythmic. The goal of relaxation massage is to promote a sense of deep relaxation and well-being.
Swedish Massage
This is the most common type of massage geared toward improving circulation, facilitating lymphatic drainage, decreasing stress, and lowering blood pressure. It emphasizes five main features of massage including Effleurage (long, gliding strokes), Petrissage (kneading, squeezing, and lifting motions), Friction (pressure across the grain of the muscles) Tapotement (percussion, includes rhythmic tapping, chopping, and cupping movements) Vibration (gentle shaking or trembling motions).
Deep Tissue Massage & Trigger Point Therapy
Deep tissue massage can be beneficial for a variety of conditions, including chronic pain, muscle tension, injury rehabilitation, and postural imbalances. Deep tissue massage can cause soreness and discomfort in very tense or sensitive areas of the body. As such, it is important to communicate with your massage therapist to ensure that nothing is overbearing. It is not uncommon to be sore for a couple days after deep tissue massage.
Trigger point therapy focuses on parts of the body where muscle knots are causing pain or discomfort. If left untreated, they can lead to multiple issues, including but not limited to, chronic pain, musculoskeletal dysfunction, and even tension headaches. Tigger point therapy has the therapist apply light, sustained pressure on the knot over a period of time that can last up to two minutes. The amount of time will vary depending on the size of the knot, and can take multiple attempts to fully fix.
“Our focus is on finding and fixing the underlying problem – not just masking it.”
Massage – Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
How does Massage therapy work?
Massage therapists manipulate body tissues in a way that leads to increased circulation, increased lymph drainage, lower stress levels, increased tissue health, and many other effects that improve the body’s ability to function. It isn’t uncommon to be sore for a few days after a massage. Even more so if the muscles worked are extremely tight or sensitive. Certain types of massage therapy can even be used in injury prevention. While it cannot prevent all injuries, it is far more difficult to injure oneself with healthy tissues.
How much does a Massage visit cost?
The cost of massage depends on the extent of care and time of services. Prices for some services are shown in the table below.
Massage Therapy | Price,$ |
---|---|
1 Hour Massage – 50 minutes hands on work | 75 |
1 and a half hour Massage – 70 minute hands on work | 110 |
When to see a Massage Therapist?
You can see a massage therapist for just about anything. There are very few instances when you shouldn’t see including the first four hours of taking medicine as the improved blood circulation will cause the medicine to pass through the body faster than intended resulting in the medicine being less effective than it normally would be. You also shouldn’t seek massage therapy if you have low blood pressure as massage therapy lowers blood pressure levels which can be dangerous in some cases. Massage therapy can is a very beneficial means of healing that is safe for just about everybody. If you have sciatica pain, there is a chance massage therapy can be beneficial as one of the major causes for sciatic pain involves a muscle that massage therapists can work. Some people even see massage therapists because massage helps them sleep better.

Does insurance cover massage?

Contact your health insurance provider to learn more about your plan. Fortunately we provide these services at an affordable rate that is often more cost effective than insurance deductibles.
How often can I see a Massage Therapist?
It is ideal to see a massage therapist every two through four weeks. Less than two weeks is rarely beneficial for recovery.
What do I wear to a Massage appointment?
What you wear for a massage visit depends on your personal comfort level and the type of massage you’re receiving. Here are some general guidelines:
Comfortable Clothing: Many massage therapists recommend wearing loose, comfortable clothing to your appointment. This makes it easier to undress and dress again after the massage. You might wear items like yoga pants, sweatpants, or athletic shorts, along with a T-shirt or tank top.
Sheets and gowns provided for privacy. Some people prefer to wear underwear during their massage for modesty or comfort reasons. However, if you’re comfortable, you can choose to undress completely. Rest assured, professional massage therapists are trained to drape you with a sheet or towel to ensure your privacy and comfort at all times.
Remove Jewelry and Accessories: It’s a good idea to remove any jewelry, watches, or accessories before your massage session. This allows the massage therapist to work more effectively without any interference or risk of damage to your belongings.
Ultimately, the most important thing is to wear whatever makes you feel comfortable and relaxed during your massage. Your massage therapist will ensure your privacy and dignity are respected throughout the session, regardless of what you choose to wear.
